Learn step-by-step how to wire and mount an Armordillo LED grille on your 2021-2023 Ford F-150, including key mistakes to avoid.
Quick answer
Install your Armordillo LED grille by first disconnecting the battery, removing the factory grille, wiring the LED harness with a relay to an accessory fuse, and then bolting on the new grille with supplied hardware.
Why wiring quality matters more than the grille itself
The Armordillo LED grille is designed for factory-level fitment on 2021–2023 Ford F-150s, but the LED wiring is where most DIY installations fail. A poor connection can cause flickering, blown fuses, or the grille lights not working at all. Take time on wiring, not just mounting.
What you’ll need (beyond the grille)
The grille includes the LED assembly and mounting brackets. You must supply: a 10mm socket set, trim removal tools, wire strippers, crimp connectors, a multimeter, and a fuse tap or scotchlok for the power source. Choose a fuse that powers the accessory only when the ignition is on.
Step-by-step installation
- Disconnect the battery and remove the factory grille: Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Use a trim tool to pop out the upper grille cover, then remove the seven 10mm bolts holding the grille. Pull the grille forward, disconnect the parking sensor harness (if equipped), and set the old grille aside. Common mistake: pulling the grille without disconnecting sensors can damage wiring clips.
- Mount the new Armordillo LED grille: Position the new grille into the grille opening, aligning the mounting tabs with the factory holes. Hand-thread the supplied bolts, then tighten to snug. Do not overtighten—the plastic frame can warp. Check gap consistency on all sides before final tightening.
- Run the LED power wire and install the relay: Route the red power wire through the firewall grommet on the driver side. Connect the wire to a fused 12V accessory circuit (e.g., fuse #22 in the passenger fuse box). Ground the black wire to a clean chassis bolt. Secure the relay with a zip tie. Common mistake: tapping a constant 12V fuse causes the lights to run with the engine off and drain the battery.
- Test the lights before final assembly: Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition to accessory mode and verify the grille lights illuminate. If they don’t, check your ground and fuse connection with a multimeter. Swap the load direction on the fuse tap if the lights stay off.
- Tuck wiring and reassemble the trim: Zip-tie any excess wire away from moving parts (hood hinges). Reattach the sensor harness and pressure-clip the upper grille cover. Torque all bolts to factory spec or hand-tight. Common mistake: leaving wire loops that rattle against the radiator support—use zip ties every 6 inches.
